Yu-Gi-Oh! means "King of games" in Japanese, from yugi meaning game and o (also transliterated as ou or oh) meaning king. Furthermore, given the name of the protagonist, it can also be read as King Yugi, a double reference to his position as best player and that of pharaoh.

It was produced by Toei Animation and aired on TV Asahi between April 4, 1998 and October 10, 1998, with 27 episodes and a theatrical film released on March 6, 1999.
